Pruning For Structure, Not Just A Trim
Good pruning is about the plant’s long-term structure, not just knocking a hedge back to size. We prune to open up airflow through the canopy (which reduces fungal disease), remove dead or crossing branches before they become a bigger problem, and shape plants in a way that encourages strong new growth rather than the same overgrown silhouette next season.
Timing matters — spring-flowering shrubs like lilac or forsythia are pruned right after they bloom, while summer bloomers and most hedges take a late-winter or early-spring cut before new growth starts. Getting this wrong is the single most common mistake we see from DIY pruning.
When you prune matters as much as how you prune — cut a spring-blooming shrub at the wrong time and you’ve removed next year’s flowers.
